Lore24 Week 12
This week I am at it again with my Lore24 Quick d20 Table to occasionally take off the burden of thinking of a prompt everyday for my Lore24 work on Sablevine
Posts this week include: the Elven Empire is making moves on Sablevine, with a trusted commander entrenching in the region. A system for establishing megabeasts and Beast Gods for your Sablevine. Finally, I think aloud about maps.
Week 11
Day 75
Rolled an 8 - add a new rumor to a random page.
Random Page: the Immutable Emperor of the Elves from the empire in the east. They seek to re-establish dominion over Sablevine, but they also seem to be seeking someone or something in the heart of the forest.
Day 76
I have dubbed the warband of Warlord Jobin as the Perse Warband. More to come!
Day 77
3 - create a new place. I'll take the option to roll on the POI table: d10: 6 - a lair! We'll do Megabeast lairs. This one took a bit of work. I'll count this as at least two days' work.
When you start a game or campaign in Sablevine, roll three times to determine the megabeasts that stalk the region. Roll one 2d6 straight, once with a -1, and once with a +1. Re-roll any duplicate results.
The result furthest from "7" (highest or lowest) is the Beast God of the region. The result closest to the Beast God result is the dominant megabeast of the region--not any more intelligent than any others of its species, but it is large and aggressive/territorial. The last unused result is a megabeast of the region that is Manifesting. We'll roll for the manifestation(s) separately.
2d6 | Megabeast/Beast God | Size | HD |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Roc | 36m, wingspan | 36 |
2 | Titan Boa | 12m, length | 12 |
3 | Grizzly Bear | 7m, length/tall | 7 |
4 | Panther | 6m, length | 6 |
5 | Hawk | 5m, wingspan | 5 |
6 | Alligator | 15m, length | 15 |
7 | Wolverine | 6m, length | 6 |
8 | Woolly Mammoth | 11m, shoulder | 11 |
9 | Mosasaur | 15m, length | 15 |
10 | Therizinosaur ("Zinosaur") | 5m, length | 5 |
11 | Spinosaur | 16m, length | 16 |
12 | Queztalcoatlus | 7m, wingspan | 7 |
13 | Tyrant Lizard | 18m, height | 18 |
Example: The three rolls were a 7, 7 (8-1), and 9 (8+1). We'll reroll the second roll: we get a 1 (2-1). So our results are: 2, 7, 9.
The furthest result from 7 is the 2. Consulting the table, this denotes that there is a Roc Beast God terrorizing the region. The closest roll to the 2 is a 7--from the table, this means there is a hyper-aggressive mega wolverine roaming the forests. Lastly, the 9 is left which means there is a Mosasaur in the lake, manifestation emanating from its body into the waters of the lake, its tributaries, and the surrounding area.
Between a Roc god scanning the open plains from the sky, an aggressive wolverine as big at the shoulder as a man huffing through the forests, and a mutant Mosasaur haunting the lakes, travel anywhere in the region will be fraught!
Now these last two tables will help think of a lair for these megabeasts and beast gods. Lastly is a (WIP) table for characterizing the Beast God.
Megabeast | Lair |
---|---|
Roc | High Cave |
Boa Snake | Pit |
Grizzly Bear | Low Cave |
Panther | Tree |
Hawk | Nest |
Alligator | Swamp Cave |
Wolverine | Burrow |
Wooly Mammoth | Glade |
Mosasaur | Lake |
Therizinosaur | Hidden Clearing |
Spinosaur | Swamp + Rocky Hollow |
Queztalcoatlus | Chasm |
Tyrant Lizard | Roaming |
Roll | Beast God | Name | Rules | Mein | Desire |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Roc | ||||
2 | Titan Boa | ||||
3 | Grizzly Bear | ||||
4 | Panther | ||||
5 | Hawk | ||||
6 | Alligator | ||||
7 | Wolverine | ||||
8 | Woolly Mammoth | ||||
9 | Mosasaur | ||||
10 | Therizinosaur ("Zinosaur") | ||||
11 | Spinosaur | ||||
12 | Queztalcoatlus | ||||
13 | Tyrant Lizard |
Rendition of a Therizinosaur. What a freak! Imagine on of these humping it toward you.
Day 78
16 - add a hook, quest, or situation to a random Faction.
Warlord Jobin is seeming to me to be unstable. I'm thinking drugs (and the paranoia, the waves of depression and mania) plus he's in possession of a fantasy WMD to should some excitement to the region.
Day 79
3 - another place. POI d10 roll gave a 8 - another Lair! Sablevine is getting dangerous.
Cantonment of the Elven Envoys
This is the main encampment of the Envoys, and the seat of their local leader the First Purota Mekomi. The encampment is meant to be mobile but has ground itself in fast. The temporary structures and walls are teetering on the brink of permanent edifices.
Expect perimeter scouts, strange effects, and traps as these Elves have been humming Spellsongs into the surrounds for years now.
... which is not really a Lair so much as a fortress. So:
Smaller camps of Envoys can be found throughout Sablevine, sent out from the HQ. These smaller camps are a random encounter for certain hexes. I'll detail these smaller camps next week!
Day 80
Taking a "bye" day for all the megabeast lair week earlier in the week.
Day 81
14 - repurpose old notes
I've been working diligently on map thoughts. I have a world map, just trying to pick the specific region. Should I go for a Siberian/Lake Baikal -eqsue wetland, a plains/forest/mountainous region near some Great Lakes, or the border of arid plains and a swamp? Decisions decisions.
I do think I've landed on a 25x15 (6-mile) hex map for the region. Bigger than the Basilisk Hills hex crawl, a little bigger than Dolmenwood, about the same size as the Goodman Games Points of Light setting. Much smaller than the Wolves Upon the Coast map1 and much much smaller than the totality of the Land of Nod maps.
In real world terms this is about the same as Belgium or the sovereign enclave of Lesotho in South Africa. Alternatively: 1/3 the size of Hungary or Portugal, or 1/4 the size of the state of Ohio, if that helps.

Footnotes:
Luke uses lots of water hexes so I think this "inflates" the size a little. Total hex area for Wolves Upon the Cost is 51,000 mi2, but I would guess half of that is water.↩
